Competing for Great Britain at the recent Mediterranean Orienteering Championships in Portugal Doug Tullie had an excellent few days amongst the worlds elite orienteers.  Doug took an unexpected 7th place in the Sprint Final, which isn’t his favourite distance, but then surpassed himself with 3rd place in the 15km Long Final.  Doug is now working in Sweden and training with a large orienteering club there.

On the domestic scene the club were in Livingston at the weekend for a double-header.

On Saturday competitors navigated the intricate streets and alleyways of the town in search of both UK Urban League and Scottish Urban League points.Best result of the day went to Robin Sloan, an easy winner of the M65+ class.  Lindsey Knox finished 2nd on the W55 class and Eileen Maxwell was 3rd on W40+.  Karen Maxwell took 4th place in the highly competitive Women’s Open.

On Sunday runners were in more traditional woodland with a South of Scotland event at nearby Deans and Dechmont Law. Despite the steady drizzle competitors enjoyed their runs. Fiona Forrest finished top woman on the Blue course, Pauline McAdam 1st W55 on Green, Eileen Maxwell 1st W50 on Blue, Patrick Heger 3rd on Short Green and Marc Heger 4th on Orange.

Thanks to Ian for another entertaining afternoon out, despite all your reservations you all seemed to have enjoyed the challenge.  The Yellow course comprised a short Yellow and then a short Yellow+.  Other courses were micr-o with no control codes on the map and 1 minute penalty for each wrong punch.

Well done to the 12 competitors who completed all 3 courses especially those who would normally have ran an Orange course. (this was a big step up)

Fiona was the only person to make no mistakes on all 3 courses, Lindsey managed 2 wins and no mistakes out of 2 courses but Faisal was a worthy winner with easily the fastest time and only 1 wrong control (although he did get 2 penalties for missing out controls 13 & 14 on course 3).

Here’s a spreadsheet of the penalties picked up per course.

I promise normal type courses for Bowhill on 29 March.

Tweedbank and Club Champs 2014

Reiver’s new gazebo had a real baptism at Tweedbank, as the morning’s rain was a lot more persistent than expected. Be careful if you’re standing at the edge to avoid water off the roof running down the back of your neck, but the shelter round the computer on such a wet day pointed to a good investment for the club.

Well done Lindsey for a storming run to win the Club Championship and bad luck Yousuf for mistaking a “Yellow course” only control for a counter. The correct one wasn’t far away, so he might have still been runner up. Ian just pipped Faisal for second spot – all these runners making good decisions how to link controls as efficiently as possible, and just as important, which were the best ones to miss out.

Abbotsford House provided a good assembly and the underpasses enabled us to allow juniors to be fully competitive while staying safe. Good to have a such a big turnout of club members in such wet conditions, which made the morning’s splashing round Tweedbank with coils of wire to secure the units well worthwhile – but why did I chose so many trees of massive girth as control sites?!

Thanks to all for coming, and to Lindsey, Rob and Alan for invaluable help.

Festive Frolic 2013

East Lothian Orienteers annual Festive Frolic was held at Vogrie Country Park near Gorebridge today.  As usual it was a sort-of score event with a twist, this year controls marked on the map but with clues to bonus controls not marked on the map.   With 80 people running about in all directions it was a slightly crazy 60 minutes but really good fun to end the year.

Kirstin Maxwell picked up the prize for 1st woman and Lindsey Knox was first 40+ woman.
