Boxing Day event results

A miserable and thoroughly wet day did not deter a hardy band of local orienteers from competing in Roxburgh Reivers annual Boxing Day competition around Wilton Park, Hawick. The continuous rain saw competitor’s maps and the organiser’s time sheet gradually turn to soggy mush but the conditions did offer a chance for some to try out the new waterproof jackets that Santa had brought the day before. The event involved competitors visiting as many check points as possible within a time limit of 30 minutes. Penalty points were deducted for every minute over the half hour.

Much to his surprise, Andrew Tullie of Teviothead emerged the overall winner, collecting near to the maximum number of points available and taking the ‘scalps’ of his older brothers and his dad. Close behind in joint second were Ian Maxwell from Jedburgh and Andrew’s brother James. In the ladies competition Fiona Forrest of Darnick collected the highest number of points but was heavily penalised for being late back to the finish. This enabled Hawick’s Lindsey Knox to leap-frog into first place. Kirsten Maxwell of Jedburgh was awarded a special prize for the soggiest check sheet. After the event competitors enjoyed refreshments and a presentation of prizes in the dry environs of Hawick Cycling Club, thank you to the Cycling club for the use of this facility.
