FVO win 11 Person Relays at Bowhill

FVO won this year’s Scottish Relay Championships at mainly sunny Bowhill today, with Interlopers coming second. FVO comfortably won with a winning time of 1:52:05, some ten minutes ahead of Interlopers. Third place was taken by Team Edinburgh from Edinburgh University Orienteering Club.

FVO also won the newly introduced handicap competition, proving that the handicap system devised to even out the competition still requires some further tweaking. As if that was not enough, FVO also managed a near clean sweep of the spot prizes for the winning times on each of planner James Tullie’s courses.

Despite organising the event, there was some success for Roxburgh Reivers, with club member Kirstin Maxwell winning the ‘Best Junior’ prize for her 19th place on the Orange course running for Tay.

AGM and Club Champs 2004

Roxburgh Reivers now annual club championships and AGM were held at Bowhill Estate on Sunday 15 February. Two of the Reivers rising stars James and Douglas were absent as they were taking part in a National orienteering development training weekend in the Lake District; this left the Championship very open indeed. The previous day’s exertions in the Pentlands at the Carnethy 5 Hills Race did not seem to affect John Tullie or Robin Sloan too badly as they finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Handicap race. However, they were not quite quick enough to catch the winner, Ian Maxwell of Jedburgh. Ian had warmed up by mountain biking around Glentress Forest the previous day. Kirsten Maxwell continued to show her good from by finishing first junior, 7th overall.

Snowy Elibank

Roxburgh Reivers and a snowy Elibank played host to the penultimate event in this year’s South of Scotland Orienteering League on 8 February. Despite the inclement weather conditions in the days preceeding the event, and a rather bitter wind on the day itself, over 115 competitors made the journey to the Tweed vallety to sample planner Robin Sloan’s courses. Feedback at the download ‘trailer’ indicated that most people enjoyed the challenging courses, surely added to by the novelty of running through snow in the higher parts of the forest. Although most Reivers were involved with helping on the day, some club members still managed a run. Notable results included Andrew Tullie (2nd on the Green course) and brother Douglas (4th on the Blue course), with Karen Maxwell 5th on the Yellow course.
