Sun shines on Bowhill

Results and officials’ comments are now available for Roxburgh Reivers’ recent ESOL and East of Scotland Orienteering Association Inter-Club Championships at Bowhill Estate. Results can be accessed from the Results Page.

A warm Spring day ensured a reasonable turnout and the first use of SportIdent electronic punching went relatively smoothly, despite a minor technical hitch midway through the day which prevented competitors from downloading for 10 minutes or so. Although most Reivers were involved in organising and helping, some good results were still recorded with Karen and Kirsten Maxwell coming second and first on White and Yellow respectively. James Tullie was fourth after an early run on the Brown course, with Douglas Tullie finishing seventh on the competitive Blue course.

Roxburgh Reivers’ next fixtures will be the annual Summer Series which takes place in May and June. Full details will be posted on the Web site soon.

The event will also encorporate the 2003 East of Scotland Orienteering Association Inter-Club Championships. Organiser is John Tullie, with Lindsay Knox planning. The controller is John Biggar of Linoc. Starts are from 10:30 to 12:30 with registration from 10:00 to 12:00.

The event will be signed from the A708 Selkirk to Moffat road at the General’s Bridge (NT 432 281 – opens in a new window) with registration and toilets at the Estate Courtyard. The event will be Roxburgh Reivers’ first using SportIdent electronic punching and will offer the usual ESOL course selection. Download the flyer in MS Word Format.

Club members can expect to be allocated a helpers duty in the near future if they have not already been collared by John. For more details see the flyer or the Roxburgh Reivers Fixtures Page. Alternatively contact John by email:john@bowanhill.demon.co.uk or phone: 01450 850217.

Tullie wins Club champs

Correct choice of footwear was all-important at the Roxburgh Reivers Club Championship meeting last Sunday, as recent snow had melted, then frozen hard, making the tracks and paths of Bowhill Estate into a skating rink.

The going was good under the forest canopy, and Douglas Tullie from Teviothead, caught just the right balance of hill and track, in choosing his route over the demanding terrain. Handicapper Rob Cranston had devised a classic competition, where careful choice of controls and route was more important than overall speed. John Tullie, with the lowest handicap – none were off scratch – was closest to son Douglas, but still a few minutes adrift. This was a good start to the season for the young Hawick High School pupil – Douglas is already a member of the Scottish Junior O Squad – and augers well for the 2003 Orienteering season about to get under way.

Runners packed in behind the Teviothead duo, with not much separating Darnick’s Robin Sloan, Dick Warren from Morebattle, Jim Knox of Hawick and Chris Hall from Eshiels. First lady back was Kirstin Maxwell from Jedburgh just ahead of Hawick’s Lindsey Knox.

Full results will be posted on the Results page in the next couple of days
