Lauder sprint 25/4/23 – results

The results from Lauder are HERE

Planner’s comments:

Tuesday night’s RR event at Lauder was well named as a Sprint, as with one control to go, four runners were within 40 seconds of each other – then unfortunately Colin Williams missed out the easy 14th control, eyes fixed on the Finish banner. So a win for Ian Maxwell with the Darlow duo of Tim and Ellie very close behind. Good to see Tim running again after his skiing accident and thanks to everyone else for coming to explore the backstreets of Lauder. I added the last few controls on terrain, to give variety and a slight change in the kind of decision making required.

St. Boswells/Club Championships results 20/4/23

Sportident sesults from the St Boswells urban race are HERE.

Thursday evening (20th April) was the rescheduled date for the RR club championships at St Boswells. Thick ice on the pavements in January made it an easy decision to postpone. Instead we were blessed with a sunny evening, although a deceptively cold wind.
Being a relatively small area, the wiser members of the club suggested I design an odds and evens score event. Although everyone seemed to have a good run, the speedier runners were polite enough not to complain that I’d definitely miss-calculated the running time. A quick post race decision was made to stick with the original handicaps which meant the prestigious club championship trophy (rather an amusing hotch potch of mementos stuck to a plinth) went to Robin Sloan. Andrew Armstrong took 2nd place and Lindsey Knox 3rd. Next time I think I’ll avoid the complexity of a score !
Two younger residents of St Boswells sped round their course, having enjoyed their orienteering coaching session the previous week at St Boswells Primary School. Hopefully the McLeod’s from Lauder will be inspired to join the club and the Dalgleish’s will be back for more of the RR sprint series.

Gordon Community Woodlands 4/3/23

Full results from today’s event are now HERE

Thanks to Robin for Planning/Organising the event and the weather 🙂

Planner writes: Here is a belated note about the Local event at Gordon Community Woods last Saturday. Thanks to all who came and hope you all enjoyed the run. Well done to Ian who just pipped Phil by 14 seconds, the lead changing hands a couple of times as there seemed to be some route choices  – as a course planner that’s always satisfying. Also well-done to Ava and Roddy, you both had some excellent split-times – you clearly benefitted from Ian’s coaching session!

Thanks to Rob for help setting up, to Lindsey for doing the computing with help from Eileen, and to Eb, Judith, Eileen, James, Ian and Max for bringing in controls (I think I’ve forgotten someone… apologies if so)

Something to remember next time at Gordon is that the wall symbol (although the legend says ‘uncrossable’) doesn’t mean it must NOT be crossed. The only features it is forbidden to cross on rough terrain (using the ISOM 2017 standard) are purple lines or hatching, and olive for private land. Watch out though, sometimes the map says something like ‘all fields are out-of-bounds’ without the purple lines. Conversely, on urban terrain using the ISSprOM 2019 standard, thick black lines and thick green lines must also NOT be crossed. So the point is, next time at Gordon, if you think it is safe to cross, you may cross either of the walls on a direct route. (You may also legally cross the pond with the black line round it, but it’s highly recommended not to try!) If the above causes confusion rather than clarity, have a word with Ian, Lindsey or myself.

Thanks again for coming.

Eildons event 18/2/23 – results

Full results from today’s event on the Eildons are HERE

Planner’s/Organiser’s report

Well done to everyone who braved the rain, mist and infamous Eildon mud to take part in this event, planned as the second in the Roxburgh Reivers’ Winter series.  It was great to see such a good attendance, with runners from a number of other clubs and some young families too. I hope you all felt welcome and enjoyed your run despite the weather.

I certainly enjoyed planning the event, even with the difficulties of trying to avoid some horrendous areas of wind-blown trees  following last year’s gales – we ended up flagging part of the Yellow and Orange courses to guide runners around some of the obstacles.  Although I had kept the courses relatively short to take account of the time of year and the conditions  underfoot, there was a fair bit of climb on all courses.  The Yellow course stayed on paths and rides through the woods, while runners on Orange and Light Green had the treat of venturing up into the mist on Eildon Wester Hill, which spiced things up a little by introducing that slight element of doubt about direction and distance…

Thanks to Robin for acting as Controller, making numerous map updates to show the worst of the wind-blow, and providing invaluable advice on course lengths and design, as well as setting out and bringing in controls on the day.  Thanks also to Lindsey for entries and download, and to those other hardy souls who ventured back out in the cold and rain to clear up afterwards – Rob Cranston, Bridget Khursheed, Judith and James Purves and John Tullie.

Thanks to Buccleuch Estates and the Maxwell family (local farmers) for permissions.

Lanton 3/12/22 – Results

Results from Lanton are HERE

Thanks to Ian and Eileen for planning/organising a challenging event – only John managed the whole 3 loops. Apologies for the lack of printed results, the laptop seems to have lost the printer software since the last time we used it.

The Christmas lunch at The Caddy Mann was excellent and we had a good blether too.
