The first in a series of 3 night orienteering events is being held around Darnick.
Parking: From the Melrose by-pass A6091, turn off at the traffic lights for Borders General Hospital. After 50m, ignore main entrance to the Hospital on the left and continue straight on for 200m where the road splits three ways. Take the middle road (which leads eventually to Huntlyburn House), going to the right of the Busy Bees Nursery and almost immediately turn right into a small gravel car park.
Registration: from 6.15pm will be in the car park, and very close to the Start and Finish. No toilets available here. As the course crosses a bus route – albeit a fairly quite road – no juniors under 16 years should participate without adult supervision.
Starts: From 6:30 – 7pm. Courses close at 8pm so come early if you think you might take a long time.
Courses: One course of about Orange standard. Straight line distance is 2.5km, but the optimum route will be nearer 3.5km.
Terrain: this is a mixture of urban, parkland and campus. Many of the roads and paths have street lights, but there will be dark stretches where a good headtorch will be essential. Recent rain has made the ground very soft and muddy in places, so use appropriate footwear. Take care on steps and watch out for tree roots. The course crosses a main road twice, and this MUST only be done using the underpass.
Costs: Senior members £3.50, Juniors £1.50. Non members £4 and £2. Families a maximum of £8. Bringing the correct money would be helpful.
Equipment: A head torch is better than a hand-held one. Carry spare batteries in a pocket.
The next Night Event will be on Wednesday November 20th near Hawick.
