British Orienteering Championships 2011
Douglas Tullie is officially King of the Forest after winning the Mens Elite course at the British Orienteering Championships held at Wharncliffe Wood near Sheffield on Saturday. At this level of competition the medals are usually won by seconds but Douglass winning margin for the 9 mile race was an incredible 2 minutes. The race was one of the selection races for the GB team for WOC so Douglas is hoping the win will help secure his place.
Due to injury and exams only four other Roxburgh Reivers made the trip south. John Tullie was pleased with his 7th place in M50L despite not having run for several weeks due to lambing, but he was even more pleased to see Douglas lift the most prized title in British Orienteering. Barry Veitch had a good run at his first Championships to take 4th place on M40S while Karen Maxwell and Lindsey Knox put in solid performances to finish 13th in their respective age classes.
Only Douglas and Karen ran in the Relays on Sunday. Douglas and the Edinburgh Uni team had to settle for 2nd place behind rivals Sheffield Uni, and Karen had a good run to place 2nd on her leg in a STAG/RR adhoc team which finished 8th eventually.
Spring Event 3 – Gordon Woods 11th May
Low, but select turnout last night, with only Alan and Helen Donald from the local community. Could be a clash with Beavers, but perhaps we need to re-think Gordon as a venue. Lots of Gordon Primary School children have tried orienteering, but we still need to encourage the transition to coming to events with family. Thanks to Lindsey and Donald for help. Next event at Eildon should have electronic timing with the Club’s new SI kit, as we move at last into the 21st century!
