Boxing Day 2009

15 runners had a good blast round Wilton Park in Hawick – all armed with a grid of 25 dates (historical ones not the edible ones) with the aim of finding 5 in a row as quickly as possible.

1st - Douglas Tullie

1st - Douglas Tullie

Despite the “luck” element involved Douglas Tullie still managed to scoot round the course in a very quick 18 minutes. His tactics were simple – do the points in number order until he had his 5 and in this case he completed the task after 18 of the 25 controls. Other less successful tactics included running past controls that “probably weren’t important” or trying to guess the dates at certain places. One person got more than one line and didn’t realise it (no names mentioned but she’s apparently the brainy one in the Maxwell family and it’s not Eileen or Karen) and two people managed to finish with incorrect answers.
2nd - John Tullie

2nd - John Tullie

John Tullie was 2nd overall having taken a medium-distance option. Karen Maxwell finished first lady and 3rd overall, an excellent run having found one of the shorter possibilities. The shortest possible route was the furthest right hand column option of controls 11,14,23,24,6 (about 1.9km) which Kirstin and Robin both completed.
3rd - Karen Maxwell

3rd - Karen Maxwell

Thanks to Rob for organising the hall and the prizes, and Jim for checking the course and doing the number-crunching. Also thanks to everyone for coming along, expecially our 3 Interlopers guests. I’ll need to think of something more devious for next year !
