*** Note the slightly different from normal start window for this event.

Parking/Registration/Start:  Near Rhymer’s Stone, signposted off the Melrose by-pass and beyond the Crematorium.

Start and Course closure times:  Starts are between 11am and 1pm, courses close at 2:30pm after which controls will be collected in.  Beginners on the Red course should come along no later than 12 noon – navigating over the Eildons for 5 miles will take a bit longer than just plain running. We suggest that other competitors come along after 12 noon to avoid queues at Registration.

Courses:  There will be a selection of courses:
Yellow for beginners;
Orange a little bit harder than Yellow;
Green, much more difficult and which is for experienced orienteers; and for this event, there’s also a Red course (reasonably easy hill and trail navigation but longer at 5 miles over the Eildon hills and a good race, offering navigation practice, for hill runners and hill walkers).

Course Lengths:
Yellow                   2.3km                   75m climb
Orange                 2.8km                   110m climb
Green                    4.2km                   175m climb
Red                        6.3km                   245m climb

Start and Finish
The Start is about 500m with 50m climb up a path from the parking area. From the Finish, turn left onto the old road back down to Download.

Equipment etc:
Please bring a compass. There will be help and explanation of how to navigate at the Start for anyone who hasn’t done it or anyone who wants to understand better.  Yellow, Orange and Green competitors must wear full leg cover, Red competitors may wear shorts. In the event of bad weather you may be required to carry a waterproof hooded top, come prepared.

Entry fees:  £4 for senior orienteering club members, £2 for junior orienteering club members.  £5/£2.50 for senior/junior non-members.  Family entries with young children going round with one map count as one junior non-member £2.50.   Add 50p if you want to hire a contactless timing dibber.  Older dibbers are free to hire.  The entry fee includes one waterproof map.

Entries:
2/3/24: Entries have now closed.  There are plenty of Yellow and Orange maps available for Entry on the Day but only 3 of Green and 2 of Red so email James Purves (email below) to book one.

This event will be helping to raise awareness of and funds, after costs, for the Harris Trust https://harristrust.org/
