Abbotsford and AGM

13/01/2024 @ 12:00 pm

The first club event of 2024 will be the Club Championships and Open Score at Abbotsford, with the pre-AGM social and AGM following on at Darnick Village Hall.  Please bring a small food contribution for the social.

Parking:  In the main Abbotsford House car park which is a Pay & Display car park, £1 for 2 hours, £2 for the whole day.

Start Times:  12 noon mass start for the Championship/Open Score.  12:05 for the easier course.

Courses: RR Championships / Open Score of 30 minutes plus an Orange course (medium difficulty).  Remember to bring a watch, late penalties apply on the Champs/Score course.  Note: Full leg cover required.

IMPORTANT !    Club members must pre-enter if they want a handicap in the club championships otherwise you’ll be given the same handicap as the fastest person.

Entries:  have now closed.  There are a small number of extra maps being printed so if you wish to book one of them please email Kate Darlow.

Entry fees:  Senior members £4, Junior Members £2, Senior non-members £5, Junior non-members £2.50.  British Orienteering have increased the levy on senior non-members which is an increase of 50p on the 2023 prices.  Seniors can join the club and Scottish Orienteering for only £13, Juniors only £2.50.  https://www.scottish-orienteering.org/membership/membership/

Timing:  By Sportident.  Hire a contactless dibber for 50p, free hire of an older dibber.

Terrain: The Abbotsford woodland is mostly on a NW facing slope with variable runnability. There is also a large area of flat flood plain, with some paths and scattered mature trees.  This is bounded by the unfenced river Tweed, which should be treated with respect especially by juniors. The B6360 road follows the upper edge of the woodland being used and is OUT of BOUNDS to runners when competing. The area is very popular with walkers and dog walkers, so please be courteous to other visitors you may encounter.  The Visitor Centre should be open, but if using the toilets, please avoid trailing mud on the floors.

Map: the scale is 1:5000 with 5m contours. As the area is long and thin, the map is tilted to allow it to fit on A4 paper. So don’t take a bearing using the edge of the paper!

Organisers:  Darlow family

AGM at Darnick Hall: The hall is in the centre of Darnick, map here. The two War Memorials are set in the gable end of the building, should make it easy to spot. Please don’t park beside the Hall, use the wider road on the Melrose side and please avoid blocking any access.
