January 18th 2014
RR Club Championships and Local Event
(Club AGM follows at 2pm at The Barns, Tweedbank)
Please read these notes fully, as there is important information about the event, especially regarding juniors.
Tweedbank is an Urban area, but has lots of parkland so be prepared for controls in areas rough underfoot – which may be muddy – so wear appropriate shoes.
Parking is at the new Abbotsford House Visitor Centre, TD6 9BQ, located here. This is a few hundred metres along the B6360 from the roundabout on the A6091 Galashiels to Melrose road. From the entrance gate, follow the access road around a loop for 350m to park at the EAST end of the parking area.
£1.50 for Juniors, £3.50 for adults ( less 50p for RR members), families a maximum of £6.
Registration from 12.15 . Please be ready to run at 12.45pm.
Massed Start Handicapped Course, RR Club Championships:
The Club Championships will be run as a Massed Start Handicap event. Non-club members are welcome to compete and it would be useful if everyone could let us know in advance if you plan to come, to ensure we have sufficient maps.
The number of controls you have to visit depends on your Age Class. Remember your age class depends on the age you reach in 2014, so your class may have changed on January 1st. See the table below to find out many controls you need to visit. The winner will be the fastest to return to the finish having visited the correct number of controls.
Being an urban area, there will be road crossings. BOF Guidelines state that M/W 16s and below will not be able to cross “roads with significant traffic”, but it was agreed at the SOUL event in September that most roads in Tweedbank are “roads with traffic management which induce slow speeds”. Therefore we WILL accept entries for the Massed Start event from juniors who have reached their 12th birthday on the day. However, to conform to these guidelines, the main bus route which runs through the middle of Tweedbank must be crossed only at the underpass by ALL competitors. The underpass will be marked on the map as a “crossing point”. The main roads themselves are out-of-bounds and marked with red crosses on the map, but you may run along the pavements beside them.
To assist in planning your route, there will be 12 controls to the west of the bus route and the Start is on this western side. There are 8 controls in the eastern part. Remember, the eastern part must be reached using the underpass, both there and back. The controls have no points values as in a Score event and you may choose any controls from either east or west to make up your total.
Approaching the finish, you will have to cross the main road A6091, and this must also be crossed at an underpass. Therefore control 101 is compulsory to all competitors and counts as one of your total. You must use the underpass, even if retiring.
Make sure you double check that you have visited the correct number of controls before heading to the finish!
Juniors under 12 years old will be able to do this course, which is entirely free of road crossings, but note the route follows paths close to Tweedbank Loch. If parents are unsure about older juniors doing the Massed Start Handicap event, they should also enter the Yellow course. The Yellow course will also cross the main road towards the finish, using an underpass at control 101.
This course is suitable for those with a little orienteering experience, but probably not for younger children setting out on their own for the first time. Unfortunately we do not have enough equipment to offer a White course.
Please make sure you are registered and ready to walk to the start as a group at 12.45. The Massed Start event will be at 1.00pm, with the Yellow course immediately after, but there will be a 500m walk for all competitors to the start which involves crossing the main road. This crossing will be marshalled, but parents please take responsibility for your children’s safe crossing of the road. There will also be one minor road to cross, so please take care crossing this too.
The finish will not be near the start, but back nearer to the car park. Please remember, that even if you do not complete your course, you should return under the main road via control 101. N.B. Courses close at 2.00pm
