A new area and map  !  Smailholm Tower/Sandyknowe Craigs.

Terrain:  The area is much more complicated than we ever realised and while it’s great for experienced orienteers there aren’t many paths or similar features which would enable us to have a beginners course so, regrettably, we will have only Orange and Short Green courses.

Courses:  The Orange 2.3km is TD3 (medium) difficulty and the Short Green 3.1km TD5 (hard) difficulty.  Orange is suitable for people with a little bit of experience, Short Green for experienced people.  The Tower is quite prominent and the area is bounded by fences and walls so you can’t get totally lost though. This is a compact area but should provide a good technical test for all competitors. It is an open area with a large amount of rock detail and gorse thickets which make for an interesting challenge.

Parking:  Follow the brown signs for Smailholm Tower. It is best approached from the B6404 St Boswells to Kelso road. Note that the final approach takes you through Sandyknowe Farmyard. Parking is in the normal parking area for the Tower which is currently closed. Map ref:  NT 637342.  What3 words:  nerd.surprises.bagels
